Postnatal Physiotherapy & Recovery

The weeks and months after giving birth are a time of enormous physical change. A pelvic floor assessment at around 6 weeks postnatally is strongly recommended for all women, even if you’re feeling well, as it helps ensure you’re on track for returning to exercise safely and can identify any pelvic floor concerns early.

Pelvic health physiotherapy can also help if you experience postnatal symptoms such as urinary leakage, prolapse, or pain during sex, supporting recovery, confidence, and long-term pelvic health.

Why a postnatal assessment matters

Giving birth (vaginally or via caesarean) can affect the muscles, connective tissue, and nerves of the pelvic floor and surrounding areas. Early assessment allows us to:

  • Check pelvic floor strength, coordination, and function

  • Screen for urinary or bowel changes, prolapse, or pelvic pain; or risk factors for later development

  • Develop a personalised plan to support recovery and return to exercise

  • Provide advice for safe lifting, posture, and daily activity

Even if you feel “back to normal,” early screening can prevent issues from developing or worsening over time. and supporting your individual needs.

At Elevate Pelvic Health we commonly help people with:

  • Urinary leakage during activity, coughing, sneezing, or exercise

  • Pelvic organ prolapse or bulging sensations

  • Pain or discomfort with intercourse

  • Abdominal separation (diastasis recti) and core weakness

  • Musculoskeletal pain in the back, hips, or pelvis

How pelvic health physiotherapy can help

Postnatal physiotherapy focuses on retraining muscles, improving coordination, and restoring confidence in movement. Your care may include:

  • Pelvic floor and core muscle assessment and exercise guidance

  • Education about safe return to exercise and impact activity

  • Guidance for lifting, carrying and posture, especially with your baby

  • Hands-on treatment if appropriate for pain or musculoskeletal issues

  • Individualised support for ongoing pelvic floor or prolapse management

Supporting your recovery and wellbeing

Recovery after birth is highly individual. Our approach is evidence-based, person-centred, and practical, helping you restore function, reduce symptoms, and confidently return to the activities you love.

Whether you’re returning to exercise, managing pelvic floor symptoms, or seeking reassurance about your recovery, pelvic health physiotherapy can support you through your postnatal journey.
