Bladder Control & Urinary Concerns

Bladder concerns are very common, but they’re not something you have to “just live with”.

Urinary incontinence (involuntary leaking of urine) affects around 1 in 3 women at some point in their lives, and bladder symptoms can occur at any age, not just after childbirth or menopause. Men can also experience bladder leakage and other urinary concerns, particularly following prostate surgery or with pelvic floor dysfunction.

Pelvic health physiotherapy is considered a first-line treatment for many bladder conditions, meaning it is recommended before medication or surgery in most cases.

How pelvic health physiotherapy can help

Bladder symptoms are often linked to how the pelvic floor muscles, bladder and nervous system are working together.

Your pelvic health physiotherapy assessment may include:

  • A detailed discussion of your bladder symptoms and habits

  • A bladder diary

  • Pelvic floor muscle assessment (external and/or internal, with your consent)

  • Assessment of breathing, posture and abdominal muscle function

  • Identification of lifestyle and behavioural factors that may be contributing

Treatment is individualised and may include:

  • Pelvic floor muscle retraining (strengthening or relaxation, depending on your needs)

  • Bladder training and urgency suppression strategies

  • Education around bladder habits, fluid intake and toileting posture

  • Exercise modification and return-to-impact guidance

  • Support through life stages such as pregnancy, postpartum and menopause

You’re not alone, help is available

Bladder symptoms can have a significant impact on confidence, exercise, work and social life, but they are very treatable. Early assessment and appropriate treatment often lead to excellent outcomes.

If you’re experiencing bladder leakage, urgency, difficulty emptying or bladder-related pain, pelvic health physiotherapy may be able to help.
